Chesapeake Crash on I-464: 2 Dead After Wrong-Way Collision With Ambulance
CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 464 early Sunday morning left two people dead and another critically injured after an ambulance and sedan collided head-on, according to Virginia State Police.
Crash Details
The wreck occurred around 2:30 a.m. near Exit 2 at Military Highway. Investigators say a 2024 Ford Econoline ambulance owned by Midwest Medical of North Carolina was traveling south when it was struck head-on by a 2022 Lexus sedan driving the wrong way in the southbound lanes. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire.
Victims Identified
The ambulance driver, 22-year-old Skye A. Oraczewski of Elizabeth City, N.C., was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.
The ambulance’s passenger, a 53-year-old man from North Carolina, was also taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
The Lexus driver, 39-year-old Shakena Shamae Taylor-Pannell of Virginia Beach, died at the scene.
Investigation Underway
State police confirmed that alcohol and speed are being investigated as potential factors in the deadly crash. The families of the victims have been notified, and the crash remains under investigation.
This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about wrong-way driving incidents on Virginia interstates, many of which have ended in fatalities.
