Neuse River Expected to Crest Above Flood Stage in Johnston County by Tuesday Afternoon

CLAYTON, N.C. – A flood warning is in effect for Johnston County as the Neuse River is forecast to crest above flood stage by Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

Officials say minor flooding is expected along both banks, with water reaching the edge of the Neuse River Greenway Trail.

Flood Levels and Timing

Late Monday, the river stood at 7.5 feet but is projected to climb past its 9-foot flood stage overnight. The crest is expected to peak near 10.1 feet by early Tuesday afternoon before receding below flood stage by early Wednesday morning.

Floodwaters may spill over onto the greenway at Covered Bridge Road, creating hazards for pedestrians and cyclists.

Safety Warnings for Residents

Authorities urge residents to avoid riverbanks, especially after dark, when rising waters are harder to detect. Greenway trail users should steer clear of low-lying sections, and motorists should remain alert for potential water on nearby roads.

The warning follows recent heavy rainfall across central North Carolina, which has added runoff to already high river levels.

Next Update and Preparedness

The next update from the National Weather Service is expected Tuesday afternoon. Officials remind residents to monitor alerts and prepare for potential road closures.

Those in flood-prone areas should move valuables to higher ground and keep emergency supplies ready.
