Tracking Beaufort County’s Traffic Deaths: New Map Shows Locations of 2025 Fatal Crashes

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. — A new interactive map is giving residents a clearer picture of where deadly crashes have occurred in Beaufort County this year, offering insight into the areas most at risk for serious roadway incidents.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 13 people have lost their lives on county roadways so far in 2025 — a number slightly lower than the 17 fatalities reported by this time last year. The deaths, recorded as of August 7, include three pedestrians, two motorcyclists, and two bicyclists.

Most Fatal Crashes Happened on Major Highways

Officials say all but one of the fatal collisions happened along major arteries such as U.S. 278, U.S. 21, and S.C. 170. These heavily traveled corridors connect Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head Island — and have long been recognized as high-traffic zones.

Two of this year’s victims — one pedestrian and one bicyclist — died in suspected hit-and-run crashes, and neither case has yet led to an arrest.

Death Rate Lower Than Previous Year

While 2024 closed with 26 total highway fatalities across Beaufort County, 2025 is on track for a slightly lower total if the current pace continues. The decline is modest but still notable, especially given that South Carolina ranks among the top 10 states for roadway deaths relative to population.

Compared to larger counties like Charleston, Greenville, and Spartanburg, Beaufort records far fewer fatalities — but officials caution that every death represents a preventable tragedy.

The New Interactive Fatal Crash Map

The updated mapping tool shows the approximate location of each roadway death so far this year. By clicking on the individual markers, users can view details about each incident, including the type of crash and links to earlier coverage.

County leaders hope the resource will encourage safer driving habits and help target enforcement and safety improvements in the most dangerous spots.
