Rain Continues Across South Carolina This Weekend as Flood Risk Persists

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After an exceptionally wet week across the Palmetto State, forecasters say the rain isn’t done yet. More showers are expected through the weekend, particularly in southern and coastal South Carolina, where flood risks remain elevated.

Flood Risk Remains in Lowcountry

The National Weather Service warns that flash flooding risks remain in the “Marginal” category for much of the Lowcountry through the weekend. This is due to a tropical airmass combined with a stalled front lingering over southern Georgia and north Florida.

While severe weather threats are considered low, isolated storms could still produce damaging winds topping 60 mph.

Earlier in the week, rainfall totals exceeded seven inches in parts of the Midlands and Upstate, particularly between I-20 and I-85. This deluge triggered river flooding along the Saluda and Congaree Rivers.

Weekend Rainfall Outlook

Forecasters say the heaviest weekend rainfall will likely fall over the southern and coastal regions of South Carolina. One inch of additional rain is expected, with localized areas possibly seeing more through Monday.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to remain alert and avoid driving through water-covered roadways.

Tropical Systems Under Watch

The broad low-pressure system that lingered off the coast this week fortunately failed to organize into a tropical storm, with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) giving it only a 10% chance of development before it moves away early next week.

However, the NHC is tracking another disturbance in the Central Atlantic that currently has a 50% chance of becoming a tropical storm by next Friday. While it is in a somewhat unfavorable environment for now, slow strengthening is possible, and it remains unclear whether it will impact South Carolina.
