2-Year-Old Killed in Dog Attack After Being Left Alone by Babysitter in Valdosta
VALDOSTA, Ga. — A 2-year-old boy was killed in a dog attack after being left alone for more than two hours at a home daycare in Valdosta, according to authorities. The babysitter, who police say was running an unlicensed daycare, has been charged in connection with the child’s death.
Child Found Dead After Dog Attack
Officers with the Valdosta Police Department (VPD) responded to a home on the 3800 block of Pecan Drive on Saturday, October 4, after reports of a dog mauling. When first responders arrived, they found the toddler already deceased.
Authorities identified the child as Kaimir Jones, according to a GoFundMe page created by his mother. Police believe that while Jones was under the care of 48-year-old Stacy Wheeler Cobb, he was left unattended for more than two hours.
Babysitter Accused of Sleeping While Child Wandered Outside
Investigators say Cobb told officers she had fallen asleep and assumed the boy was safe inside. During that time, the child reportedly made his way into the backyard, where he opened a kennel containing two large Rottweilers. Police say the dogs attacked and killed him.
VPD confirmed that Cobb was allegedly operating an unlicensed daycare and typically cared for around 10 children on most days, though Jones was the only one present when the attack occurred.
Arrest and Charges
Cobb was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children, both felony offenses. Authorities say additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
Lowndes County Animal Control officers seized the two Rottweilers involved in the attack, along with a third dog found at the property.
Police Call the Incident “Horrible and Preventable”
Valdosta Police Chief expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating:
“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred. Because of negligence on this offender’s behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child. I want to express our department’s deepest sympathy to the family. No words will ever ease their pain, but our hearts go out to them during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Detectives are still processing evidence, and officials said the case remains under active investigation.
