Woodstock Man, 25, Drowns in Lake Chatuge During Early Morning Swim
TOWNS COUNTY, GA — A tragic drowning in the early hours of Saturday has claimed the life of a 25-year-old Woodstock man who disappeared while swimming in Lake Chatuge, located in far northeast Georgia.
Victim identified as Brek Lewis Green
According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the victim has been identified as Brek Lewis Green. Green had been spending time with a friend near a cove in the lake, swimming on floats around 4 a.m. When the friend exited the water, they urged Green to follow, but he reportedly stayed behind.
Float found, search launched across the cove
When the friend later returned, Green was no longer visible. In response, authorities launched a search operation. His float was discovered at a dock across the cove, prompting use of sonar equipment to locate him underwater. After hours of searching, Green’s body was found around 11:45 a.m., approximately 35–40 feet from the dock and submerged in 13 feet of water.
Recovery with help from North Carolina officials
The recovery operation was assisted by multiple agencies, including the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and Towns County EMS. Green’s body was officially recovered around noon and was handed over to the Towns County Coroner for further investigation.
A somber reminder during summer swim season
The incident underscores the dangers of late-night swimming, particularly in lakes where visibility is low and supervision may be limited. While floatation devices can provide temporary safety, they are not a guarantee against drowning.
Green’s untimely death has left the community in mourning, with many expressing condolences to the family and calling for greater awareness around water safety during overnight recreation.
