Woman Killed in Johnston County I-40 Crash; Two Drivers Charged
CLAYTON, N.C. — A woman from Hope Mills was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Johnston County, where troopers say two other drivers have been charged.
Crash on I-40 East Leaves One Dead
The collision happened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday at the 311-mile marker on I-40 East. Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a blue Mini Cooper, a red Ford F-150, and a black Jeep Grand Cherokee were all traveling eastbound when the crash unfolded.
Investigators determined the driver of the Mini Cooper slowed down, and the car was rear-ended by the Ford pickup behind it. The truck then swerved onto the right shoulder, but the Mini Cooper was struck again — this time by the Jeep.
Victim Identified as Hope Mills Woman
The driver of the Mini Cooper, Cheryl Elaine Boesel, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was remembered by family and friends as a longtime Hope Mills resident.
Two Drivers Face Charges
Troopers charged the Ford’s driver, Scott Faircloth of Dunn, with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
The Jeep’s driver, Miriam Biviano of Raleigh, was charged with failure to reduce speed and driving without a license.
Authorities said both charges stem from contributing factors in the chain reaction that led to Boesel’s death.
Highway Patrol Urges Caution
The fatal crash shut down parts of I-40 East as investigators worked the scene. Troopers again urged drivers to leave safe following distances and remain alert, especially on high-speed corridors like I-40.
