Vogel State Park Opens New Visitor Center With $4.67M Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Grant
GEORGIA — On August 7, 2025, Vogel State Park — Georgia’s second-oldest state park — celebrated the grand opening of its new 6,500-square-foot visitor center, a major milestone made possible in part by a $4.67 million grant from the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program.
Honoring History and Enhancing Visitor Experience
Located beside Lake Trahlyta, the new center blends rustic design elements inspired by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the group that originally built the park during the Great Depression.
Inside, visitors will find:
- An expanded retail area with souvenirs, books, clothing, hiking gear, and grab-and-go meals.
- Dedicated office space for Park Rangers to assist guests.
- A reservable multipurpose room with a catering kitchen for birthdays, retreats, and community events.
“This new visitor center reflects the importance of Vogel’s legacy and our commitment to preserving it,” said DNR Commissioner Walter Rabon, noting the facility will “enhance the experience for every visitor” and prepare Vogel for another century of memories.
A Beloved Destination in the North Georgia Mountains
Drawing more than 350,000 visitors annually, Vogel State Park has long been a favorite getaway for families. The opening comes just in time for the fall season, a period often considered the park’s most scenic.
Angie Johnson, Director of the DNR Parks and Historic Sites Division, praised the project, saying Vogel remains “a treasured tradition” for generations of visitors.
Previous Investments in Vogel’s Growth
The Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program has also funded $2.2 million in campground renovations and dredging of Lake Trahlyta in recent years. These improvements have:
- Addressed erosion and sedimentation issues.
- Enhanced accessibility for all visitors.
- Modernized the camping experience to attract new guests.
These ongoing investments solidify Vogel’s reputation as one of Georgia’s premier outdoor recreation destinations.
The new visitor center is expected to serve as the central hub for tourism, events, and outdoor education at Vogel, offering a space where Georgia’s natural beauty and history meet modern comfort.
