Virginia Weather Alert: Coastal Flooding and Strong Winds Expected Through Sunday
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Coastal residents are being warned to brace for flooding and strong onshore winds through Sunday morning, as a powerful fall storm system continues to churn offshore, bringing rough surf and gusts near 35 mph to the Virginia coastline.
Flooding and High Tides Along the Coast
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday for low-lying areas along U.S. 60, Shore Drive, and several bayfront neighborhoods. Water levels could rise 1.5 to 2 feet above normal, with some roads becoming impassable at high tide.
Forecasters also issued a Beach Hazards Statement through Friday evening due to dangerous rip currents and elevated surf. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water until conditions improve.
Rain and Winds to Intensify Saturday
The weather system is expected to strengthen Saturday as a cold front pushes in from the west, bringing steady rain and gusty easterly winds. Sustained winds up to 30 mph, with gusts topping 35 mph near the shoreline, could lead to scattered power outages and minor property damage from blowing debris.
“Periods of heavy rainfall may cause ponding on roads and brief urban flooding,” the NWS said, noting that the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake are at the greatest risk.
Conditions Improve Early Next Week
By Sunday afternoon, winds will shift northwest, ushering in cooler and drier air. Highs will drop into the mid-60s, marking one of the first true tastes of fall for the region.
The weather is expected to clear completely by Monday, bringing sunshine and low humidity — ideal for pumpkin patches and outdoor events heading into mid-October.
