Virginia Beach Weather Alert: Strong Winds and Rough Surf Slow Traffic on U.S. Route 60

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Drivers and beachgoers are being warned of strong winds and rough surf that could cause travel delays and dangerous water conditions along the coast Monday.

Winds and Rip Currents Impact the Coast

The National Weather Service in Wakefield reported northeast winds between 18 and 21 mph with gusts topping 30 mph, leading to blowing sand, reduced visibility, and choppy waves.

A moderate rip current risk remains in effect through Monday evening for Virginia Beach and eastern Currituck County, where swimmers are urged to stay out of the water.

Travel Hazards on U.S. Route 60

The gusty conditions are also expected to impact U.S. Route 60, slowing traffic and creating hazardous driving conditions for commuters. Officials advise drivers to allow extra travel time and use caution on coastal roadways.

Forecast Through the Week

The rough weather will ease by Tuesday, though light showers could move in late, creating slick spots on local roads. By midweek, skies will clear and temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-70s, marking the start of a more settled stretch.
