Tracking the Tropics: Meteorologists Warn of High Chance for Atlantic Storm Development This Week

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Meteorologists are closely watching a developing tropical system in the central Atlantic that could strengthen into a tropical depression within the next few days, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Tropical Wave Gaining Strength in the Atlantic

Forecasters say a broad area of low pressure is producing widespread showers and thunderstorms across the central Atlantic. The system, currently moving west-northwest, is expected to encounter favorable conditions for gradual development through the week.

By late week, the disturbance is expected to approach the northern Leeward Islands, prompting forecasters to advise residents in the region to monitor updates closely.

“The environment looks favorable for organization,” said meteorologist Michelle Kennedy. “A tropical depression is likely to form as the system tracks westward over the warm Atlantic waters.”

Recent Storms Keep Atlantic Active

The system follows recent tropical activity from Humberto and Imelda, both of which brought heavy rainfall and high winds to parts of the Atlantic basin earlier this season. Meteorologists say this latest disturbance could continue the active trend as the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season moves into its final two months.

If the tropical wave develops, it would take the next name on the storm list — Jerry.

Residents Urged to Stay Alert

Although the storm remains far from the U.S. coast, experts emphasize that tropical systems can strengthen rapidly. The Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30, leaving ample time for additional activity.

Officials urge residents and travelers in the Caribbean to stay alert for updates from the National Hurricane Center and local meteorological agencies as the system moves closer to populated areas.
