Tracking Invest 91-L: Tropical Disturbance Could Develop Into Gabrielle in Atlantic

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Forecasters are monitoring Invest 91-L, a tropical disturbance in the central Atlantic Ocean that could strengthen into the season’s next named storm, Tropical Storm Gabrielle, early next week.

Development Chances Increasing

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the system has a 30% chance of development within the next 48 hours and a 60% chance within seven days.

The disturbance is producing showers and thunderstorms as it moves westward at 10 mph across warm waters. Ocean temperatures in the low to mid-80s are favorable for storm growth.

Conditions for Growth

While upper-level winds are favorable, dry air in the atmosphere could limit development in the short term. Meteorologists say that if the system establishes a low-pressure center, forecast models will be able to better track its intensity and path.

Potential Path and Timing

The disturbance, which formed off the west coast of Africa, could approach the Lesser Antilles by mid-to-late next week.

Computer models currently vary, but experts say clearer guidance will emerge once the storm organizes. For now, the NHC emphasized there is no threat to the U.S. within the next 10 days.

Hurricane Season Context

This development comes as the Atlantic enters its peak hurricane season, when warm seas and favorable winds often fuel rapid storm formation. Residents across the Southeast are reminded to monitor forecasts closely.
