Thunderstorms, Hail, and Flash Flooding Threaten Northern California Into Early Tuesday

FRESNO, Calif. — Residents across parts of Northern California are under a weather alert as thunderstorms bring pea-sized hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall, with risks of flash flooding expected to continue into early Tuesday morning.

Strong Storms Overnight

The National Weather Service in Hanford issued a special weather statement just after midnight Tuesday, warning of storms moving northeast at 10 mph across the Fresno-Tulare Lower Sierra and Kaiser to Rodgers Ridge areas.

At one point, Doppler radar tracked a thunderstorm about 28 miles southwest of North Lake Campground and 29 miles west of South Lake. Officials noted that minor hail damage to vegetation is possible as the system passes.

Locations impacted include Lake Wishon, Wishon Dam, West Woodchuck Meadow, and Dinkey Creek.

Lightning Hazards

The NWS cautioned that frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Since lightning can strike up to 10 miles away, residents are urged to seek immediate shelter inside sturdy buildings or vehicles.

Officials added that storms may intensify and warned residents to monitor radio and television for additional advisories.

Safety Guidance

The National Weather Service recommends:

  • Moving to safe shelter when skies darken or thunder is heard
  • Avoiding open fields, ridge tops, and isolated tall trees
  • Staying away from water, metal objects, and tents during storms
  • Waiting at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before resuming outdoor activities

Travel Risks

Heavy rain is also creating hazardous driving conditions. Officials urge motorists to:

  • Keep headlights on, even in daylight
  • Drive in middle lanes and on higher ground to avoid pooling water
  • Avoid puddles and flooded areas that could cause hydroplaning
  • Maintain safe distances from large vehicles that reduce visibility

Outlook

The storms are forecast to weaken by Tuesday morning, but wet roads and lingering thunderstorms may continue to affect commutes across the Sierra region.
