Suspect in I-85 Fatal Shooting Turns Himself In, Faces Murder Charge

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, V.A. — A 19-year-old suspect has surrendered to authorities in connection with a fatal shooting along Interstate 85 in Virginia late last month, state police confirmed.

Suspect in Custody

The suspect, Jason Allen Glidewell II of Bracey, turned himself in on September 3 after an acquaintance contacted the Virginia State Police (VSP) to report his whereabouts. Glidewell was taken into custody at the Meherrin River Regional Jail without incident, with assistance from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Alberta Police Department, and local VSP troopers.

Charges Filed

Glidewell is now facing charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the death of 20-year-old Hunter A. Bates, formerly of Colonial Heights.

Bates was killed on August 28, when troopers were called to a report of shots fired along I-85 northbound at the five-mile marker in Mecklenburg County. Responders found a Honda Civic off the side of the road in a culvert. Bates was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger in the car was hospitalized but later released.

Glidewell also faces outstanding misdemeanor charges in Nottoway County unrelated to the shooting.

Court Appearance Scheduled

The vehicle believed to have been driven by Glidewell during the incident was recovered by VSP on September 2. Glidewell is scheduled to appear in Mecklenburg County General District Court on September 4.

This tragic case has reignited concerns about gun violence along Virginia’s interstates, where state police say even small altercations can escalate into deadly encounters.
