Suspect Charged After Attempted Robbery and Assault of Off-Duty NYPD Officers at Penn Station

MIDTOWN, Manhattan — A man accused of attempting to rob and assault two off-duty NYPD officers at Penn Station during rush hour is now facing charges, according to police.

Incident During Rush Hour

The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. Wednesday on the Long Island Rail Road concourse between tracks 18 and 19, when 32-year-old Jahmar Stewart allegedly tried to rob a man who turned out to be an off-duty NYPD officer.

Stewart then got into a scuffle with the officer, prompting the man’s wife — also an off-duty NYPD officer — to fire her weapon.

Suspect Shot by Officer

Authorities said Stewart was shot in the arm and stomach. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in custody under treatment.

Police said no commuters were injured, though witnesses were stunned as officers rendered aid to the bleeding suspect on the train platform.

Charges Filed

Stewart has been charged with:

  • Attempted robbery
  • Assault

Law enforcement officials noted the off-duty couple had been working at the UN General Assembly earlier that day and were heading home when the confrontation occurred.

The investigation is ongoing, but police said Stewart is expected to recover from his injuries.
