Summerville Police Investigating Fatal Train Crash Near Downtown Main Street Crossing

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – Authorities in Summerville are investigating a fatal train crash after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a Norfolk Southern freight train near the Main Street crossing Friday evening .

Victim Killed at the Scene

Police said the unidentified victim was walking on the tracks near the Summerville Museum when an eastbound train heading toward Charleston hit them. Officers confirmed the pedestrian died at the scene.

“The incident occurred near the heart of downtown, where pedestrian and vehicle traffic is often heavy. The investigation is ongoing,” police noted in a statement .

Impact on Traffic Downtown

The train had temporarily blocked traffic near Hutchinson Square at Main Street and West Doty Avenue. Police redirected vehicles to Hickory and Maple Street crossings, urging drivers to avoid the area.

Norfolk Southern crews later cleared the scene, and roadways were fully reopened late Friday night, though investigators remain on-site to review the circumstances.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not released the victim’s name pending notification of family members. Norfolk Southern officials are cooperating with local police as the investigation continues.

Local residents expressed concern about the busy crossing, which has been the site of heavy foot traffic for years. One downtown worker said, “It’s always a little scary seeing people cross so close to the trains. This is heartbreaking.”
