SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A workplace accident at Spartanburg Steel Products has claimed the life of a 48-year-old man from Boiling Springs. The incident happened Tuesday at the factory’s facility on New Cut Road, according to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.

Officials say the victim, identified as Russell Edward Layton Jr., was working on a forklift when the fatal accident occurred. Emergency responders transported him to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is assisting local authorities in investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. As of now, officials have not released further details about how the accident happened or the exact nature of the forklift operation at the time.
