Southern West Virginia Weather Alert: Gusty Storms Could Disrupt Plans from Parkersburg to Beckley

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gusty winds and scattered thunderstorms are forecast to move across southern West Virginia on Thursday, raising the potential for isolated power outages and travel delays, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Level 1 Severe Risk Issued

The NWS has placed much of the state under a Level 1 (Marginal Risk), with strong winds as the primary concern. While showers may begin in the morning, forecasters expect the most intense activity to redevelop mid-afternoon and continue into the evening.

Areas Most at Risk

Storms are expected to produce damaging gusts and dangerous lightning from Huntington to Clarksburg and south through Beckley. Communities such as Athens, Parkersburg, Elkins, and Snowshoe are advised to remain weather-aware, especially during the evening commute.

“Even though widespread damage is unlikely, isolated tree or utility line issues can’t be ruled out,” NWS officials noted.

Travel and Outdoor Impacts

The storms may force residents to reconsider outdoor plans and exercise caution on the roads, particularly those driving high-profile vehicles that are more vulnerable to gusty crosswinds.

Storm Hazards and Benefits

While the system could cause localized problems, officials say it may also deliver beneficial rainfall to parts of the state. Scattered hazards, however, remain possible through Thursday night.
