South Carolina Student Arrested After Knife Found at Columbia High School
RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A 17-year-old student at Spring Valley High School in Columbia was arrested Tuesday morning after deputies say he attempted to bring a knife onto campus.
Knife Detected at Security Check
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened around 10 a.m. when the school’s metal detectors alerted officers to a potential weapon inside a student’s bag.
Deputies said a utility-style knife was discovered, and the student was immediately detained by school resource officers.
Juvenile Charges Filed
Authorities confirmed the student was charged as a juvenile with carrying a weapon onto school property. He was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
Officials have not released the name of the student due to his age.
School Safety Concerns
The arrest has renewed concerns about safety protocols and the importance of security measures like metal detectors on school campuses.
