Smiles and Record Crowds Mark Opening Weekend of NC Mountain State Fair in Fletcher

FLETCHER, N.C. — The North Carolina Mountain State Fair kicked off its 2025 run with big crowds, new attractions, and plenty of smiles as families gathered at the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher.

Record Attendance

Opening weekend drew thousands of visitors. Friday’s kickoff saw more than 11,000 attendees, and Sunday’s turnout of 19,000 marked the best in five years. Saturday brought in over 21,000 despite forecasted rain.

“We were really excited about how the opening weekend went and just the smiles on everybody,” said Ellerslie McCue, the fair’s marketing and communications manager.

New Attractions and Family Favorites

This year’s fair features the Red Trousers Show, an acrobatics and juggling act, and a fishing pond for children, both of which have proven popular.

For animal lovers, the “Mooturnity Ward” continues to be a highlight, where children can see cows and calves up close. “I love cows because they said cows make some of the ingredients to make my favorite drink, chocolate milk,” said 5-year-old Ben Sams, who attended with his grandparents.

The pig and goat races at Wild Beal’s Speedway remain a family staple, with three generations of the Saunooke family from Cherokee enjoying the show together.

Arts, Crafts, and Community

Inside the Expo Building, artisans displayed woodworking, crafts, and art. Retiree Terry Browne of Fletcher demonstrated intricate wood carvings, highlighting the fair as a place to build community through creative skills.

Agriculture was also front and center. North Carolina Agriculture Secretary Steve Troxler and USDA Secretary Stephen Vader announced a $220 million block grant to support farmers recovering from Tropical Storm Helene.

Fair Runs Through September 14

Last year, nearly 150,000 people attended the nine-day event, and organizers expect another strong showing in 2025. With rides, shows, food favorites like funnel cakes and fried Oreos, and agricultural exhibits, the fair promises entertainment for all ages.
