Shooting Near Charlotte Homeless Camp Leaves One Dead, One Seriously Injured

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A deadly shooting early Tuesday morning near a homeless encampment in east Charlotte left one man dead and a woman hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police confirmed.

Shooting Happened Behind Shopping Center

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday behind the Dollar Tree Plaza shopping center on Albemarle Road.

Both a male and a female victim were shot. The man died at the scene, while the woman was rushed to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition, authorities said.

Police Investigating

Officials said it’s unclear what led to the gunfire. The area is known to have a significant unsheltered population, and officers noted they have deployed outreach services there within the past year.

“This area is a bit of an area for our unsheltered population,” said Major Gene Lim of CMPD. “We’ve had some services out here recently, within the last six to 12 months.”

Police have not confirmed whether the victims lived in the camp and are still searching for a suspect.
