COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. — The tragic loss of four young sisters in a North Carolina house fire has drawn an outpouring of support from law enforcement leaders and an NBA legend.

Sheriffs and Shaq Step In

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office announced that sheriffs from across Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina partnered with Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal to provide financial relief for the grieving Ellis family.

The family lost four daughters — Kalani Rae, Kendall Xaiya, Josephina Renee, and Sophia Nachelle — in the August 30 fire. The collaborative donation fully covers the funeral and memorial expenses, lifting what officials described as a crushing financial burden.

Leaders Express Solidarity

Participating sheriffs included:

  • Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett — Henry County
  • Sheriff Patrick Labat — Fulton County
  • Sheriff Levon Allen — Clayton County
  • Sheriff Craig Owens — Cobb County
  • Sheriff Melody Maddox — DeKalb County
  • Sheriff Keybo Taylor — Gwinnett County

“As a father, my heart is broken for the Ellis family,” O’Neal said in a statement. “What I can offer is love, support, and a promise that their lives will not be forgotten.”

Sheriff Scandrett added, “The tragedy the Ellis family suffered is one that shakes us all to our core. Our goal is to let them know they do not walk this journey alone.”

A Community Mourns Together

The Columbus County fire has left neighbors and loved ones reeling, with vigils and community gatherings held in the girls’ memory. The show of support from across state lines reflects how deeply the tragedy resonated beyond North Carolina.
