Rosman, North Carolina, Rocked by Three Earthquakes in Four Days — Experts Explain the Cause

ROSMAN, N.C. — The quiet mountain town of Rosman, population roughly 750, experienced three minor earthquakes in just four days, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data. The quakes struck on Saturday, Aug. 9 and Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, registering magnitudes between 1.8 and 2.1. While most residents felt nothing, a few reported brief tremors over the weekend.

An Unusual Spike in Seismic Activity

Historically, Rosman has recorded only about a dozen earthquakes in the past 25 years — all small. However, eight of those have occurred in 2025 alone, including a magnitude-2.4 tremor in late March. That uptick stands out for a region not typically known for frequent seismic activity.

Experts say Rosman’s location — far from the edges of tectonic plates — doesn’t make it immune to earthquakes. The Appalachian Mountains were formed by massive tectonic collisions hundreds of millions of years ago, leaving behind ancient fault lines. Over time, natural stress within the North American plate can cause those old faults to slip, producing low-level quakes.

Why Small Quakes Still Matter

While earthquakes under magnitude 2.5 rarely cause damage, they serve as a reminder of the region’s hidden vulnerabilities. Larger quakes are rare but possible — as shown by the magnitude-5.1 Sparta earthquake in 2020, which caused minor damage across Western North Carolina.

Earthquake Preparedness

Emergency officials recommend simple precautions if shaking begins:

  • Indoors: Stay inside, away from windows, and protect your head and neck.
  • Outdoors: Move to an open space away from buildings and trees.
  • In a vehicle: Pull over to a safe spot and remain inside until the shaking stops.

Officials also urge residents to keep basic supplies — flashlights, batteries, bottled water — on hand and to check on neighbors after any seismic event.
