Raleigh Man Arrested After Allegedly Stealing $450 in WakeMed Hospital Break-In
RALEIGH, N.C. — A 30-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police say he broke into WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh and stole $450 from several safes inside the facility.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by the Raleigh News & Observer, Burnis Lee Morgan was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with a Sunday break-in at the WakeMed location on 3000 New Bern Avenue.
Suspect Accused of Breaking Into Five Safes
Authorities allege that Morgan opened five safes in an attempt to take cash belonging to the hospital. He now faces five counts of safecracking, along with charges of breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering.
Morgan is currently being held at the Wake County Detention Center on a $65,000 bond, according to court documents. His first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday. Details of the investigation were first published by The News & Observer.
Prior Criminal Record and Recent Parole Release
Court and correctional records show that Morgan was released from parole in February 2025 following a felony larceny conviction in 2023. It’s unclear whether he was employed at the hospital or how he gained access to the secured areas where the safes were located.
Investigators have not released further details about the method used to open the safes or whether surveillance footage captured the break-in. WakeMed officials have not commented publicly on the case.
Ongoing Investigation at Raleigh Medical Center
The incident has raised security concerns at one of the city’s largest hospitals, prompting administrators to review internal safety procedures and access controls. Police say additional charges could be filed if new evidence emerges.
Residents and hospital staff are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the Raleigh Police Department as the investigation continues.
