Officer David Rose Killed in Shooting Near Emory University and CDC; Suspect Also Dead
ATLANTA, GEORGIA – A tragic shooting near Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a DeKalb County police officer and left the suspected gunman dead.
Authorities confirmed that Officer David Rose, 33, was fatally shot while responding to reports of an active shooter near the two campuses. Rose, a father of two with a third child on the way, had joined the DeKalb County Police Department last September and graduated from the academy in March.
Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick described Rose as deeply dedicated to public service, urging the community to keep his family, friends, and the department in their prayers.
Gunfire Strikes CDC Buildings
The CDC confirmed that the suspect opened fire on at least four buildings at its Roybal campus in Atlanta. CDC Director Susan Monarez labeled the incident an “attack,” noting that the gunfire erupted just before 5 p.m. and led to the campus going into lockdown.
“We at CDC are heartbroken by today’s attack on our Roybal Campus,” Monarez said, adding that a “courageous local law enforcement officer gave their life, and another was injured” in the exchange.
Coordinated Response Prevents Further Harm
Officials said DeKalb County police, CDC security, and Emory University officers acted quickly to contain the situation, likely preventing additional casualties. Governor Brian Kemp and Georgia residents were thanked for their support as the investigation continues.
The CDC remains in coordination with local and federal law enforcement agencies to determine the motive behind the attack.
Community Mourning and Investigation Ongoing
The incident has left the Atlanta community in mourning, with vigils and memorial tributes expected in the coming days. Law enforcement officials have not released the identity of the gunman or further details about the shooting’s circumstances.
