North Carolina Weather Alert: Hazardous Surf and Rip Currents Today
WILMINGTON, N.C. — Coastal residents and visitors should use caution at the beaches today as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington warns of hazardous surf, strong rip currents, and minor tidal flooding risks.
Dangerous Conditions for Swimmers
The NWS reports that east-facing beaches in Pender, New Hanover, and Georgetown counties face the greatest risk. Officials urge swimmers to only enter the water near lifeguard-protected areas and to obey posted hazard warnings.
Even experienced surfers and swimmers may find the rip currents dangerous, with the strongest risks occurring during afternoon high tide.
Forecast Overview
- Sunday Weather: Partly to mostly sunny, highs in the mid-80s inland and low 80s along the coast.
- Late Sunday Night: A few coastal showers possible in southeastern North Carolina.
- Overnight Lows: Low 60s inland, mid-to-upper 60s along the coast.
While most areas will remain dry through the day, beachgoers are advised to keep alert to changing conditions.
Advisory Follows a Week of Shifting Tides
Sunday’s surf advisory comes after a week of changing coastal conditions, driven by shifting tides and wind patterns. Public safety officials are urging beach visitors to check updates at weather.gov/ilm before heading to the shoreline.
