North Carolina Man Accused of Marrying Three Women Without Divorces
DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Detectives in North Carolina say a man is facing felony bigamy charges after allegedly marrying three different women across the state without divorcing any of them first.
Investigation Began With a Tip
The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office reported that the investigation into Harry Irvine Burdick Jr. began in April after they received a complaint about him having multiple wives. Detectives soon uncovered three marriage licenses tied to Burdick — one in Lincoln County, one in Davidson County, and another in Guilford County.
Officials explained that when they searched court records, they could not find any divorce proceedings before Burdick remarried.
Motives Cited as Financial and Personal Gain
According to investigators, Burdick admitted his decision to pursue multiple marriages was based on financial and personal gain. Authorities have not disclosed specific details about what he gained but said the pattern of his actions made the case stand out.
On August 22, Burdick was arrested and charged with two counts of felony bigamy. He was later released on a written promise to appear in court. His first scheduled court appearance is set for September 22, 2025, at the Davidson County Courthouse.
Detectives Look for More Victims
Law enforcement believes additional victims may exist, and they are urging anyone who suspects they may be legally married to Burdick to come forward.
“We are encouraging potential victims to contact the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office if they believe they may have been involved in a marriage with Burdick,” investigators said.
Officials have provided a direct line for victims or family members to reach out as they continue expanding the investigation.
North Carolina residents are now watching closely as this unusual case unfolds, raising concerns about marriage protections and the ability of individuals to slip through legal loopholes across county systems.
