MUSC to Break Ground on New Healthcare Facility in St. George, South Carolina
ST. GEORGE, South Carolina — Leaders from Dorchester County, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and multiple government agencies are set to break ground Monday on a new MUSC Health Primary Care facility in the heart of rural South Carolina.
6,300-square-foot clinic to expand care in rural Lowcountry
The new facility will be a single-story, 6,336-square-foot medical center, aimed at providing primary care and expanded mental health services to residents of St. George and surrounding Lowcountry communities.
Officials say the investment will improve access to care in an area that has historically lacked comprehensive health services.
According to WCIV News, Monday’s groundbreaking will include appearances by:
-
Dorchester County Council Chair David Chinnis
-
Vice-Chair Rita May Ranck
-
Councilman Peter Smith, Jr.
-
St. George Mayor Kevin Hart
-
MUSC Health CEO Dr. Saj Joy
-
Representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development
-
Officials from the South Carolina Office of Mental Health
Facility part of wider effort to address healthcare access gaps
The expansion reflects a growing trend in rural health investment, particularly in underserved regions of the South. The involvement of USDA Rural Development points to federal support aimed at strengthening local medical infrastructure.
This project also coincides with a broader push by MUSC to address not only physical health but also mental health challenges across the state — especially in communities impacted by long-standing gaps in care.
