COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina State Fair is set to open Wednesday under changing skies as forecasters warn of a major temperature drop across the Midlands. After a stretch of unseasonably warm weather, cooler air is expected to move in by Thursday morning.

Weather Impact Alert in Effect Midweek

Meteorologists with WLTX News19 have issued a Weather Impact Alert for midweek as a strong front brings showers, isolated storms, and a noticeable cooldown.

Wednesday will start off mild, with morning temperatures near seasonal averages before rising sharply into the low to mid-80s by the afternoon — a warm spike not typical for early October.

However, forecasters say changes will begin late Wednesday, when rain and possible thunderstorms sweep through the region.

Fairgoers Should Prepare for Rain

Unfortunately, those heading to opening day of the South Carolina State Fair may face some unsettled conditions. Light rain is possible in the morning, followed by scattered afternoon showers and storms.

“Wednesday will still be warm and muggy, but the rain could disrupt outdoor plans late in the day,” meteorologists said.

Temperatures will begin falling overnight as cooler air pushes in behind the rain system.

Big Temperature Drop by Thursday

By Thursday morning, lows will drop into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees, marking a steep decline from Wednesday’s highs. Afternoon temperatures will only reach the upper 60s, with partly to mostly cloudy skies lingering through the day.

Forecasters advise residents to keep a jacket handy and to plan for cooler, damp conditions if attending evening events at the fairgrounds.

The cooler stretch will continue into the weekend, bringing a refreshing but chilly start to fair season across the Midlands.
