Michigan Lowers Flags to Honor Victims of Minneapolis School Shooting

LANSING, MI – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims of the recent school shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, where two children were killed and 17 others injured.

Whitmer offered condolences, saying,

“Michiganders’ hearts are with the students, families, and teachers of Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.”

Directive Extends Across Michigan

The order follows a federal directive issued by President Donald Trump, applying to all public buildings and state grounds. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025.

Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II expressed his outrage at the shooting, adding,

“I am devastated and angered by the tragic shooting in Minneapolis today.”

Tragedy in Minneapolis

The shooting unfolded Wednesday when a gunman opened fire inside the school, killing two children and wounding 17 others before being taken into custody. The victims have not yet been publicly identified as investigators continue their work.

Showing Solidarity

Officials say lowering the flags is a gesture of solidarity, not only with the victims’ families but also with the Minneapolis community. State leaders urged residents, businesses, and organizations across Michigan to also lower their flags.
