Maryland Weather Alert: Severe Storms Bring Damaging Winds and Tornado Threat

BALTIMORE, Md. — Severe weather is sweeping across Maryland Thursday as strong thunderstorms bring the risk of damaging winds, heavy downpours, and isolated tornadoes.

Storm Timeline and Threats

The National Weather Service said showers were widespread Thursday morning, followed by a break in the afternoon as temperatures climbed into the low 80s.

By early evening, conditions will rapidly worsen with severe storms likely to continue through midnight.

Primary hazards include:

  • Damaging wind gusts strong enough to bring down trees and power lines.
  • Isolated tornadoes, mainly in central and eastern Maryland.
  • Localized flooding in low-lying neighborhoods and along highways.

Relief After the Storms

Conditions are expected to improve Friday, with drier air pushing in and sunshine returning as the front moves east.

However, forecasters warn another disturbance could arrive this weekend, bringing more showers late Saturday into Sunday.

Eyes on the Tropics

Looking ahead, meteorologists are tracking two tropical systems in the Atlantic. One may bring additional rainfall to the Southeast U.S. early next week, which could indirectly affect Maryland with more unsettled weather.

Marylanders are urged to stay weather-aware, secure outdoor items, and keep phones charged in case of power outages during the storms.
