Maine Drought Expands as 72% of State Faces Dry Conditions

BANGOR, Maine — Drought conditions are spreading across Maine, with nearly 72% of the state now classified as experiencing drought, according to the latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Worsening Conditions

As of Thursday, September 25, officials said drought ranges from abnormally dry (D0) to extreme drought (D3) across large portions of the state. Extreme drought is now present in Hancock and Washington counties, while severe drought continues from the Downeast region through the Central Highlands and into northern Piscataquis County.

Meanwhile, moderate drought has expanded into southern Aroostook County and the Moosehead Lake region.

Rain Offers Some Relief, But Not Enough

The National Weather Service in Caribou reported that up to 1.5 inches of rainfall was expected through Friday, but experts stressed the precipitation would not be enough to significantly improve long-term conditions.

“This is not a ‘drought buster’ event,” forecasters cautioned, warning that dry weather is likely to return over the weekend and into next week.

Public Urged to Report Impacts

Officials encouraged residents to report local drought impacts, including problems with wells, gardens, lawns, and agricultural activity. These reports help agencies track conditions and communicate growing concerns across the state.

Experts also warned that drought recovery can take months to a year, even if occasional rainfall occurs.

Statewide Concerns

Farmers and rural communities are expected to face the brunt of the drought’s impacts, with water supplies tightening and crop stress worsening as the dry spell extends.

The expanding drought underscores the vulnerability of Maine’s ecosystems and agricultural regions to shifting weather patterns.
