Illinois Weather Alert: Dense Fog and Storms Threaten I-57 and I-80 Travel Through Thursday

CHICAGO, IL — Commuters across northern Illinois are being warned of dangerous travel conditions as dense fog and thunderstorms affect interstates and suburban routes through Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service in Romeoville reported near-zero visibility along stretches of I-57 Tuesday morning, with showers and thunderstorms expected to continue through midweek.

Fog and Flooding Risks for Drivers

Motorists on I-57 and I-80, along with suburban roads near Joliet, Aurora, and Waukegan, should prepare for slick pavement, reduced visibility, and scattered ponding on roads.

Some storms could bring heavy rainfall near the Kankakee River, raising the risk of minor flooding. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution in construction zones and on ramps.

Lake Michigan Under High Swim Risk

In addition to roadway hazards, forecasters warned of a High Swim Risk for Lake Michigan beaches through midweek. Dangerous rip currents are possible, and officials advise against swimming until conditions improve.

  • Thursday: High near 70°F, mostly cloudy with a slight chance of early showers.
  • Friday: High near 78°F, sunny and calm.
