‘I died in car crash that killed half my family – then I saw something impossible’: Father Who Survived Deadly Crash
UTAH — A man who lost half his family in a horrific car accident is sharing how a near-death experience changed his life forever.
The Tragic 1997 Crash
Jeffrey Olsen was driving home with his wife and two young sons in 1997 when he briefly dozed off behind the wheel. The car rolled over, killing his wife and their 14-month-old son instantly. Olsen’s seven-year-old son survived, but Olsen himself was left with catastrophic injuries, including a broken back, collapsed lungs, and a shattered leg that had to be amputated.
He underwent 18 surgeries and spent six months in the hospital. But while his body endured unimaginable trauma, Olsen says his spirit experienced something else entirely.
‘I Was Surrounded by Light’
Olsen told NDE Journey that during the accident and in the hospital, he felt himself leave his body and enter a place of profound peace.
“I was rising above the accident scene… there was no pain, I was very much alive,” Olsen said. He recalled being held in light before seeing his late wife appear, “beautiful” and without injuries.
According to Olsen, she insisted he could not stay with her and urged him to return to their surviving son.
Meeting His Son in the Afterlife
Later, while recovering, Olsen described another vision where he found himself in what felt like “home.” He saw a corridor that led to a crib, and inside was his late son Griffin.
“I swept him in my arms, felt his weight and heat, and smelled his hair,” Olsen said. But then, a powerful presence drew near. Consumed with guilt over the accident, Olsen feared judgment.
Instead, he said he felt “divine arms” around him and heard a message: “There is nothing to forgive. It is all in divine order.”
Life After Loss
The accident occurred 28 years ago, and Olsen’s surviving son, Spencer, is now grown with a family of his own. Together, they co-wrote the book Where Are You?, reflecting on their journey through grief and healing.
Olsen says his near-death experiences erased his fear of dying. “I was in all that love, all that peace, and I kissed my little boy and trusted him back,” he recalled.
