Hiring Events Scheduled Across South Carolina for Workforce Development Month

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Job seekers across South Carolina will have multiple opportunities this month as a series of hiring events and career fairs are being organized to mark Workforce Development Month.

SC Works Leading the Effort

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce say September has become a central focus for workforce awareness. Catherine Hill, a senior business services consultant, explained that while the work continues year-round, September brings extra emphasis.

“Really, every month at SC Works is a workforce development month, but September specifically, we really focus on bringing awareness to all of the amazing opportunities that are here in South Carolina,” Hill said in a report by WCSC.

SC Works manages the state’s largest job bank, which not only lists available positions but is also required for unemployment claimants to use during their weekly job searches.

“We can advertise their jobs in our SC Works job bank. Anybody who is on unemployment in the state of South Carolina, that is the job bank they’re using to do their work searches,” Hill added.

Preparing the Next Generation

The state is also investing in early workforce development, starting with students as young as elementary school. Dr. Patricia Ferguson, a regional workforce advisor, said her team works with school counselors to help young people connect education to future careers.

“As early as possible. We need them to begin thinking about the careers earlier and not just thinking about careers but identifying what are their interests and what skills they may have that aligns with a particular job,” Ferguson said.

According to SC Works, the goal is to ensure South Carolina’s next generation understands what careers are in demand, the skills required, and how classroom subjects such as algebra apply in real-world industries.

A Month of Opportunity

With weekly job fairs, workshops, and expanded outreach, officials hope Workforce Development Month will not only match employers with employees but also strengthen long-term career pathways.

Community leaders encourage residents to take advantage of the free events and resources, stressing that these opportunities can lead to steady employment and career growth.
