Hawaii Weather Alert: Hurricane Kiko Swells Threaten East-Facing Shores, Hilo Roads at Risk
HILO, Hawaii — Residents and visitors on the Big Island are being warned of life-threatening surf, rip currents, and hazardous travel conditions as Hurricane Kiko generates powerful swells along east-facing shores.
Coastal Hazards Through Midweek
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, Hurricane Kiko will pass north of the islands Tuesday and Wednesday, sparing Hawaii direct impact but still producing dangerous surf conditions. Swells are expected to peak midweek, raising concerns for swimmers, surfers, and boaters.
Officials caution that strong rip currents could overwhelm even experienced swimmers, and beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water.
Travel Risks in Hilo
In addition to rough seas, Hilo Bayfront Highway and other coastal routes could experience hazardous conditions. Scattered showers and periods of heavy rain Tuesday and Wednesday may create slick roads, reduced visibility, and localized flooding on Highway 11 and surrounding streets.
Nighttime showers are expected to linger, compounding travel risks for commuters.
