Georgia Man Arrested for Stealing Two Skid Steers in Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY, GEORGIA — A Georgia man has been arrested and charged after authorities say he stole two pieces of heavy construction equipment from a Monroe County job site last week.

Equipment Stolen From Job Site

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Homer Douglas Roy, 35, of Fairburn, Georgia, took two skid steers from a work site on Rumble Road last Thursday.

Investigators launched a search after the equipment was reported missing and were able to locate both machines. One was recovered in Manchester, Georgia, and the other in Riverdale, officials confirmed.

Value of the Stolen Machinery

Skid steers are compact but powerful construction machines often used in landscaping, farming, and building projects.

According to John Deere, new models can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $115,000, depending on size and attachments.

The machines are particularly popular because of their versatility and ability to “turn on a dime”, making them useful across a wide range of industries. Their relatively lightweight design also makes them easier to transport — and potentially easier to steal.

Charges Filed

Roy has been charged with two counts of theft. Authorities say the case remains under investigation and more details may be released as it develops.

Law enforcement officials did not confirm whether Roy acted alone or if additional suspects could face charges.

Broader Concerns About Equipment Theft

The case highlights the vulnerability of high-value construction equipment, which can be resold or repurposed in underground markets.

Local contractors and landowners are being urged to secure equipment at job sites and invest in GPS tracking devices to help authorities recover stolen machinery more quickly.
