Georgia Business Owner Turns Bra Boutique Into Source of Strength for Breast Cancer Survivors

BUFORD, Ga. — Inside the Mall of Georgia, one small shop is changing lives in ways far beyond fashion. At the Modern Bra Company, owner Amy McGuire has transformed a simple retail idea into a safe haven for women battling or recovering from breast cancer — offering not just bras, but confidence, care, and community.

Modern Bra Company Puts Comfort and Confidence First

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when survivors and patients are reminded of the emotional and physical challenges that come with treatment. McGuire’s shop provides something many women say they didn’t know they needed — a personalized, one-on-one bra fitting experience that prioritizes comfort for changing bodies.

“This feels more like VIP status,” said customer Sabrina Lane. “I told her, ‘Where’s my champagne?’”

McGuire spends about 30 minutes with each client, getting to know their lifestyle and needs. “I always say this store is as simple to run as a lemonade stand,” she joked. “I just have more cup sizes.”

Supporting Women Through Every Stage of Recovery

McGuire admits she never anticipated how deeply her business would impact others. During planning sessions with the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center, she focused on logistics — not realizing her store would also become a place of healing and emotional connection.

Customer Lisa Graham, who was diagnosed with breast cancer halfway through the store’s development, said the boutique became part of her recovery journey.

“Serendipitous might not be the right word, but that’s how it turned out,” Graham said. “I’ve been back three or four times as my body changed during treatment.”

A Growing Mission of Hope and Empowerment

Now, McGuire hopes to expand her mission. With one location currently open at the Mall of Georgia, she plans to begin franchising by 2027, bringing her message of strength and support to more women across the country.

“I wasn’t prepared for the friendships I’d make or the stories I’d hear,” McGuire said. “It’s more than business — it’s therapy. It’s about helping women feel beautiful again.”

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Modern Bra Company is offering special discounts for new customers and continuing to raise awareness for early detection and self-care.
