Former South Carolina Correctional Nurse Charged Over Sexual Relationship With Inmate
COLUMBIA, SC — A former nurse at Broad River Correctional Institution has been charged after state investigators say she carried on a months-long sexual relationship with an inmate at the facility.
Stephanie A. Braun, 39, of Moncks Corner, was arrested on June 27 and charged with second-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).
Phone calls and confession prompt charges
Investigators with the SCDC Inspector General’s Office obtained recorded phone calls between Braun and the inmate, during which the two allegedly discussed prior sexual encounters and exchanged explicit conversations.
An arrest warrant stated that Braun admitted to engaging in a relationship with the inmate beginning in late March. At the time, she was employed as a licensed practical nurse at the facility.
She has since been terminated from her position.
Felony charge and policy violation
The second-degree sexual misconduct charge applies when correctional staff members engage in sexual contact with inmates under their care — regardless of consent — as it constitutes a violation of professional boundaries and institutional policy.
Braun’s case remains under investigation, and no bond information was immediately available as of Monday.
The full report was released by WCBD News 2.
