Former Gamecock Star Connor Shaw Launches Heart Huddle After Surviving Cardiac Arrest
SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. — Former University of South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is turning a frightening brush with death into a mission to save others. The 33-year-old athlete and community leader has announced a new statewide initiative called “The Heart Huddle” after surviving a sudden cardiac arrest last month.
The incident happened on September 17 while Shaw was coaching his son’s youth football team at Gracely Park in Simpsonville. Witnesses say he collapsed unexpectedly on the sideline just minutes into the game, leaving bystanders stunned.
Quick Action Saved His Life
An off-duty firefighter and a police officer jumped into action, performing CPR for five minutes before an automated external defibrillator (AED) arrived. Their quick response brought Shaw back — a moment he says changed his life forever.
“It’s easy to get discouraged by the state of the world, and I’ve been reminded firsthand just how much good there is,” Shaw said. “There are courageous, bold, kind, and selfless people who step up without hesitation.”
The Heart Huddle: Turning a Scare Into Purpose
Motivated by his survival, Shaw is now focused on preventing similar tragedies. His new initiative, The Heart Huddle, aims to place AEDs at recreation fields, youth sports complexes, and middle schools across South Carolina.
The program will also sponsor CPR training sessions, ensuring that more parents, coaches, and students know how to respond when emergencies strike.
“I was given a second chance,” Shaw said. “Now it’s my mission to make sure others get that same chance too.”

A Gamecock Legend with a New Mission
Shaw’s career remains one of the most celebrated in South Carolina football history. From 2011 to 2013, he led the Gamecocks to an impressive 27–5 record as a starter — the best in program history — while amassing 6,074 passing yards and 1,683 rushing yards.
He was inducted into the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021, recognized not only for his leadership on the field but also for his dedication to his community.
Leading a Statewide Push for Cardiac Safety
With The Heart Huddle, Shaw hopes to partner with schools, sports leagues, and local governments to create a network of AED-equipped facilities and trained responders.
The initiative plans to begin its rollout in early 2026, with several school districts already expressing interest. Shaw said his vision is to make South Carolina “the safest place in the country for young athletes to play.”
