Flood Watch in Effect for Eastern North Carolina Through Monday Evening

EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA – A flood watch is in place across parts of Eastern North Carolina until 6 p.m. Monday, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning residents about the continued risk of flash flooding from excessive rainfall.

The updated advisory, issued by NWS Wilmington early Monday morning, covers Inland and Coastal New Hanover, Inland and Coastal Brunswick, and Columbus County. Officials say excessive runoff could cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas. The risk is especially dangerous at night, when flood hazards are harder to detect.

NWS Safety Guidelines During Flooding

The NWS urges residents in flood-prone zones to move to higher ground immediately and evacuate if instructed. If leaving home, lock your property and disconnect utilities and appliances if time allows. Avoid basements or any space where electrical outlets are submerged, and steer clear of water that may carry an electric current.

Floodwaters can be deadly — just 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, while 12 inches can carry away most vehicles.

Driving Hazards in Heavy Rain

If you must drive in rainy conditions:

  • Turn on headlights to improve visibility.
  • Stay in middle lanes and elevated roads where water doesn’t collect.
  • Avoid puddles that can cause hydroplaning.
  • Keep distance from large vehicles to reduce water spray.
  • Never drive into flooded roads — turn around and find an alternate route.

Understanding Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds between tires and the road, causing loss of traction and control. Key factors include:

  1. Speed – Higher speeds reduce tire grip.
  2. Water depth – Even shallow water can cause sliding.
  3. Tire tread depth – Worn tires greatly increase risk.

If your car starts to hydroplane:

  • Ease off the gas.
  • Steer in the direction of the skid.
  • Wait until tires reconnect with the road, then straighten the wheel.
  • Brake gently, following your car’s braking system guidelines.
