“False Spring” Persists Across the South and Central U.S. as Warmer-Than-Normal Temperatures Dominate Late February Outlook
UNITED STATES — A stretch of unusually mild weather often referred to as “false spring” is expected to continue across much of the South and central United States through the end of February, with no major Arctic air intrusions currently showing up in forecast models.
Temperature outlooks for February 21–27 indicate widespread above-normal readings across large portions of the Plains, Midwest, and Deep South.
Warmer-Than-Normal Trend Expands Across the South
Forecast maps show the strongest warmth centered from Texas and Oklahoma eastward through Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and into the Carolinas.
Parts of the central Plains and lower Midwest are also projected to see temperatures running well above seasonal averages. In some areas, the mild spell could push daytime highs into the 60s and even 70s, reinforcing the early-spring feel. This persistent warmth has led many to question whether winter’s grip is loosening for good.
Arctic Air Absent — For Now
Meteorologists note that there are currently no significant Arctic air masses poised to dive southward in the extended forecast.
While this does not officially mark the end of winter, the lack of sustained cold outbreaks suggests that winter’s influence may become less noticeable as February closes.
Northern states, particularly in parts of the Upper Midwest and Northeast, may still experience periodic cooler spells, but the dominant pattern favors warmth across much of the country’s southern half.
Why “False Spring” Can Be Misleading
Weather experts caution that late-winter warm spells are not uncommon and can sometimes be followed by a sharp return to cold conditions in March.
However, the current outlook does not show immediate signs of a dramatic cold reversal. Instead, the mild pattern appears likely to hang on through the final days of the month.
For residents across the southern and central states, this means continued springlike afternoons — at least temporarily. Do you think winter is fading, or is another cold snap waiting around the corner? Share your thoughts with us at SaludaStandard-Sentinel.com.
