Fake Fall Returns to North Carolina This Week as Cooler, Drier Air Settles In

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — North Carolina residents are experiencing a refreshing shift in weather this week as a dip in the jet stream ushers in cooler temperatures and low humidity, creating what meteorologists often call a “fake fall.”

Canadian Air Mass Brings Relief

The WXII First Warning Weather Team said a high-pressure system out of Canada has moved into the Southeast, replacing humid summer air with cooler, drier conditions. The change has already dropped daytime highs below seasonal averages, with early mornings turning crisp across much of the state.

Morning Chill and Comfortable Afternoons

By midweek, temperatures are holding in the mid-to-upper 50s at daybreak, with some mountain valleys dipping into the 40s. Afternoon highs are expected to stay in the upper 70s, a noticeable drop from the mid-80s to low-90s that had dominated recent weeks.

Meteorologists advised early commuters to grab a hoodie or light jacket before heading out, noting the “fall-like” mornings will be one of the biggest changes residents notice.

Forecast Through the Week

The cool, dry pattern is expected to hold steady through Friday before temperatures begin to gradually moderate. A slight uptick in humidity may return by the weekend, though rain chances remain very low.

Forecasters predict the Labor Day holiday will bring comfortable mid-80s with partly sunny skies, making it an ideal stretch for outdoor activities and travel.

Seasonal Preview

While this weather is temporary, many across the state welcome the break from summer’s lingering heat. For some, it feels like an early preview of autumn — even if forecasters caution the real fall season is still weeks away.
