Eastern New York Weather Alert: Gusty Storms Threaten Mohawk Valley and Catskills Thursday Afternoon
ALBANY, N.Y. — The National Weather Service in Albany is warning that gusty thunderstorms could impact parts of eastern New York between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday, with the highest risks focused on the Mohawk Valley, western Adirondacks, and Catskills.
Damaging Winds the Main Concern
Forecasters say while widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated storms may intensify, producing strong wind gusts capable of knocking down tree limbs and causing localized power outages.
Cities and Travel Routes at Risk
Communities such as Glens Falls, Utica, and Kingston are likely to see impacts including sudden downpours, lightning, and reduced visibility.
Evening commutes and outdoor events may be disrupted, particularly along I-87 and Route 28, where heavy rain could create hazardous driving conditions.
Safety Guidance for Residents
Officials are urging residents to remain weather aware:
- Postpone outdoor activities or have a safe shelter nearby.
- Boaters on area lakes should head to shore before storms arrive.
- Monitor weather alerts through Thursday evening in case additional warnings are issued.
Clearing Overnight
Storm chances are expected to taper off after sunset as cooler air moves in behind the front. However, NWS meteorologists say updates will be issued if new storm cells form later in the night.
