Driver Shot Teen Girl During Fight Over Uber Ride Outside Dunwoody Waffle House, Police Say
DUNWOODY, Ga. — A 16-year-old girl is hospitalized in critical condition after an Uber ride dispute outside a Waffle House in Dunwoody erupted into gunfire early Sunday morning, according to police. The 38-year-old Uber driver has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.
Argument Over Ride Turns Violent
The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the 4500 block of Chamblee Dunwoody Road, police said. Investigators determined that the conflict began when a group of five teenage girls ordered an Uber to take them home after eating at the 24-hour Waffle House.
When the driver, identified as Meredith Grundy, arrived, he reportedly told the teens he could only take four passengers because of limited space and seatbelts. That’s when police say a heated argument broke out over who should cancel the ride and pay the fee.
Authorities said the confrontation escalated when one of the teens hit Grundy in the face and threatened to kill him. Grundy then drew a gun and fired a single shot, hitting the girl who struck him.
Teen in Critical Condition; Driver Arrested
Paramedics rushed the 16-year-old to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she remains in critical condition but is expected to survive, police confirmed.
Grundy was arrested at the scene and later booked into the DeKalb County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Officials have not said whether the teen involved in the altercation will face charges. Detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and review surveillance footage from the area.
