Columbus County Flood Advisory Set to Expire as Heavy Rain Ends

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. – A Flood Advisory issued for Columbus County is set to expire at 9 p.m. Thursday, as the heaviest rainfall has ended, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Forecasters say scattered light showers may persist for several hours, but flooding rainfall is no longer expected to pose a threat. Residents are advised to continue following road closure notices until conditions improve.

Safety Tips from the National Weather Service

The NWS urges residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas to remain alert and take precautions:

  • Seek higher ground immediately if flooding threatens
  • Do not enter floodwaters that may be electrically charged
  • Avoid driving through flooded roads — just 12 inches of moving water can sweep away most vehicles
  • Turn around, don’t drown — find alternate routes instead of attempting to cross standing water

Driving in Wet Conditions

The NWS also reminds drivers how to stay safe during heavy rain:

  • Keep headlights on for better visibility
  • Stick to middle lanes where water is less likely to pool
  • Avoid following large vehicles closely, as they can reduce your visibility with spray
  • Steer clear of puddles to reduce the risk of hydroplaning

If hydroplaning occurs, drivers should ease off the accelerator, turn into the skid, and wait for tires to reconnect with the road before straightening out.
