Columbia Weather Alert: Thunderstorms Possible Sunday, Sunshine and Heat Return Monday
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Residents in the Midlands should prepare for scattered thunderstorms Sunday before conditions quickly turn sunnier and hotter to start the new week, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.
Sunday Storm Risk
Forecasters say Columbia faces a 40% chance of showers and storms Sunday, mainly before 4 p.m. Heavy rain and lightning are possible during the late morning and early afternoon, particularly along I-26, I-77, and I-20, where travel could be impacted.
Skies should begin to clear later in the day, with highs near 87°F.
Sunny and Breezy Monday
By Monday, a strong high-pressure system takes over, bringing mostly sunny skies and highs near 83°F. Breezy northeast winds could gust up to 23 mph, adding to the shift in weather patterns.
Dry Stretch Through Midweek
The dry and sunny pattern is expected to dominate through Wednesday and Thursday, with highs climbing back into the mid-to-upper 80s.
The NOAA 6–10 day outlook places much of South Carolina in the “below normal” rainfall zone, meaning the dry spell could linger into mid-September.
Residents are urged to monitor soil and garden moisture and use caution with outdoor burning as humidity levels drop.
Five-Day Forecast for Columbia

- Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 81°F
- Wednesday: Sunny, high 86°F

As Columbia transitions into a drier, sunnier pattern, officials remind residents to plan for both storm safety on Sunday and heat precautions heading into the week.
