Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Inland New Hanover Through Wednesday Night
WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA — The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a coastal flood advisory for Inland New Hanover County, warning of minor flooding along shorelines and tidal waterways through Wednesday night.
Advisory Details
The advisory, in effect from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, calls for up to one-half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near tidal waterways.
Officials cautioned that certain roadways, including Battleship Road and USS North Carolina Road, may see water up to a half-foot deep, while downtown Wilmington’s Water Street could experience minor flooding of up to a quarter-foot.
“Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth,” the NWS warned. “Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.”
Safety Recommendations
The NWS advises residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas to move to higher ground and to follow evacuation orders if issued. Additional precautions include:
- Disconnecting utilities and appliances if time allows.
- Avoiding basements and rooms with submerged electrical outlets or cords.
- Steering clear of floodwaters, as just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet.
Drivers are also urged to use extra caution during heavy rainfall:
- Keep headlights on even during daylight.
- Stick to middle lanes and elevated ground to avoid pooling water.
- Maintain distance from large vehicles that can reduce visibility.
- Never attempt to drive through flooded roads, as 12 inches of rushing water can sweep away most vehicles.
Risk of Hydroplaning
Meteorologists also warn of hydroplaning risks during wet conditions. Factors include higher speeds, deeper water, and worn tire treads. Drivers who hydroplane should ease off the accelerator, turn into the skid, and gently brake once traction is regained.
Ongoing Weather Pattern
Forecasters say the flood advisory reflects the seasonal mix of higher tides, rainfall, and persistent onshore winds that can create localized flooding across coastal North Carolina.
Residents are urged to remain alert for additional updates as conditions evolve through the evening.
