Coastal Flood Advisory Issued

Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Brunswick County Until Wednesday Midday

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a coastal flood advisory for Coastal Brunswick County, warning residents of potential minor flooding in low-lying areas near tidal creeks and the Intracoastal Waterway. The advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Low-Lying Roads May Experience Minor Flooding

According to the NWS, up to half a foot of inundation above ground level is expected in the most vulnerable shoreline areas. The advisory notes that additional locations could experience flooding due to high winds, rainfall, or elevated tides.

“Low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks may observe minor coastal flooding,” officials said. “If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.”

Residents in flood-prone communities are advised to protect vehicles and property ahead of high tide cycles and to stay informed through local weather alerts.

NWS Flood Safety Tips

The National Weather Service urges residents to move to higher ground if they live or camp in flood-prone areas. Those advised to evacuate should do so immediately and secure their homes before leaving.
Officials warn against entering flooded areas or standing water that may carry electrical currents. “Even 6 inches of swiftly moving water can knock you off your feet,” the NWS stated. “A foot of fast-moving water can carry away most cars.”

Driving Safety During Heavy Rain

Motorists should use headlights even during daylight hours, drive in middle lanes, and avoid puddles or low spots where hydroplaning can occur. The NWS also cautions drivers to keep a safe distance from large vehicles, which can create water spray that limits visibility.

If a vehicle begins to hydroplane, experts recommend easing off the accelerator, steering gently into the skid, and braking slowly once traction is regained.

Advisory Duration and Monitoring

The coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday, though local officials will continue monitoring tides and potential weather impacts.
