Central Florida Weather: Residents Urged to Review Hurricane Plans as Gabrielle Moves Northwest

TAMPA, Fla. — Tropical Storm Gabrielle is gaining strength in the Atlantic, and while the system currently poses no direct threat to Florida, emergency officials are urging residents to stay prepared as the peak of hurricane season continues.

Storm Strengthening Offshore

As of Thursday, Gabrielle packed sustained winds near 50 mph and is expected to intensify over the coming days. Forecast models suggest the storm could become a hurricane by early next week, though its projected path keeps it well offshore in the near term.

The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor Gabrielle closely, warning that tropical systems can shift rapidly.

Officials Stress Preparedness

Even with no current threat to Florida, emergency management officials are asking residents in Tampa Bay, Sarasota, and Fort Myers to review their hurricane plans. That includes:

  • Checking hurricane supply kits
  • Reviewing evacuation routes
  • Testing and maintaining backup power sources

The National Weather Service in Ruskin emphasized the importance of not becoming complacent, noting that coastal conditions can change quickly.

Local Forecast for Tampa

  • Thursday: High 91°F, scattered afternoon storms
  • Friday: High 90°F, partly sunny with isolated showers
  • Saturday: High 89°F, humid with evening thunderstorms
  • Sunday: High 88°F, breezy with possible coastal rain
  • Monday: High 89°F, mostly cloudy with scattered showers

While Gabrielle is not expected to make landfall in Florida, the storm’s development is a reminder of the ongoing risks during hurricane season.
